Brazil's election to the presidency of the International Partnership for Hydrogen and Fuel Cells in the Economy (IPHE), made official at the 43rd Steering Committee Meeting held in Santiago, marks a historic moment for national science and technology diplomacy. Represented by Professor Paulo Emilio Valadão de Miranda, the country begins a two-year term at the head of the entity, which brings together the main global players in the sector and plays a strategic role in coordinating policies and projects aimed at the energy transition based on low-emission hydrogen.
Leadership with a track record and international projection
The appointment of Professor Paulo Emilio de Miranda — president of the Brazilian Hydrogen Association and one of the most active participants in IPHE since its founding in 2003 — symbolizes international recognition of Brazil's maturity in the field of clean technologies. With decades of dedication to research and institutional articulation, the new president succeeds Dr. Rebecca Maserumule, from South Africa, and places Brazil alongside countries such as Canada, Germany, Japan and the United States, which have previously held the organization's top position.
The IPHE, formed by governments committed to promoting hydrogen and fuel cell (FCH) technologies, acts as a platform for coordinating efforts in research, development, standardization and public policies. Its mission is to drive a global hydrogen economy that combines energy efficiency, environmental sustainability and security of energy supply.
Under Brazilian leadership, accompanied by co-presidencies from the Netherlands, Japan and the USA, the IPHE should deepen the dialogue on international norms and standards and accelerate the inclusion of hydrogen as a key vector in the decarbonization of economies. For Brazil, this is a strategic opportunity to influence global trends and, at the same time, attract investments and technical knowledge that strengthen its leading role in the new energy era.
