On April 16, at 10 am, the Brazilian energy sector will take a decisive step forward with the Public Call for Information for the National Integrated Natural Gas and Biomethane Infrastructure Plan (PNIIGB). The initiative, coordinated by the Energy Research Company (EPE), is the result of a joint effort by the National Energy Policy Council (CNPE) to structure a robust strategy for expanding and modernizing natural gas and biomethane infrastructure in Brazil.
The creation of the PNIIGB was made official by Decree No. 12,153/2024, as a result of the guidelines outlined by the Gas for Employment Program, established by CNPE Resolution No. 1 of March 20, 2023. The plan aims to integrate supply, demand, and infrastructure in a coordinated manner, with a view to maximizing the use of natural gas produced in the country and fostering the development of biomethane as a sustainable energy vector.

Strategic infrastructures for a sustainable energy future
The PNIIGB will be built based on a multidisciplinary approach, covering all links in the natural gas and biomethane chain: from flow, processing and storage, to transportation in its various forms — including compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG). The plan will also cover biomethane production and logistics facilities, with an emphasis on the feasibility of its integration into the national energy grid.
To this end, EPE will use data from previous plans and studies, combined with contributions obtained through the public call. The initiative aims to map bottlenecks, identify regional opportunities and structure investments that enable the sustainable expansion of the energy matrix. By encouraging the participation of various agents in the sector, the government signals its commitment to an energy policy that values efficiency, safety and the transition to cleaner sources.
