Brazil has established itself as a global leader in the production and use of bioenergy, driving the energy transition in a sustainable manner. The recent publication of the Sectoral Outlook Report - Bioenergy highlights the country's leading role and the main trends in the sector, reaffirming its role in the decarbonization of the economy and energy security.

Bioenergy and the strength of the agricultural sector

The Brazilian agricultural sector plays a central role in bioenergy production, using agricultural and forestry waste to generate biofuels, biogas and bioelectricity. Biomass derived from sugarcane bagasse is one of the main pillars of this renewable energy matrix, enabling the production of ethanol and the cogeneration of electricity. In 2024, Brazil maintained its position as the world's second largest producer of ethanol, reaching 32.5 billion liters, 85% of which came from sugarcane and 15% from corn.

The expansion of biodiesel has also been a determining factor in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the transportation sector. With the growing demand for sustainable energy solutions, investment in bioenergy becomes essential for the transition to a low-carbon economy.

Technological advances and challenges for the future

The diversification of bioenergy sources also includes biogas and biomethane, which have great potential to replace fossil fuels and ensure the country's energy security. In 2024, Brazil produced 2.1 billion cubic meters of biogas, with prospects for accelerated growth in the coming years.

The sustainability of this sector depends on efficient public policies and investments in innovation. The development of second-generation biofuels, such as cellulose ethanol, and the integration of bioenergy with new technologies, such as green hydrogen, are fundamental steps for the evolution of the sector.

With a global market increasingly focused on sustainable energy sources, Brazil has the opportunity to consolidate itself as a leader in the bioeconomy. The advancement of bioenergy represents not only a viable alternative, but an essential strategy for building a more resilient energy future with low environmental impact.
