With increasing pressure to reduce carbon emissions and meet global climate targets, low-carbon hydrogen has emerged as a strategic alternative to decarbonize intensive industrial sectors, such as steelmaking, refining and petrochemicals. In a technical note entitled “Overview of hydrogen in Brazil and RJ: challenges and next steps”, Firjan updated the number of projects of this type in the country to 102, reinforcing the role of hydrogen as a crucial vector for the energy transition in Brazil.

Hydrogen as a vector for industrial sustainability

According to the survey, the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) has already approved 12 projects technically, totaling R$ 1.49 billion in investments, of which more than 75% are financed by the agency's own Research, Development and Innovation (RD&I) program, with resources coming from energy consumer tariffs. The National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) is monitoring 35 projects by oil operators, with private investment of over R$420 million over the next four years.

Firjan emphasizes that the projects with the greatest potential for success will be those closest to final consumption, such as those intended for the production of fertilizers and sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs). To meet the demand of these segments, the federation estimates that, by 2027, the country will need to produce around 120 thousand tons of hydrogen, a volume that could triple by 2037.
