In a pioneering initiative in the Brazilian energy sector, EDF Power Solutions inaugurated its first hydrogen pilot plant in the country on November 7th, located at the Norte Fluminense Thermoelectric Power Plant in Macaé (RJ). The project, which received an investment of R$ 4.5 million under the Aneel Research, Development and Innovation Program (PROPDI), represents a strategic milestone in the search for sustainable and low-carbon energy solutions, reinforcing the company's role as a global benchmark in innovation and decarbonization.
Technology, innovation and decarbonization at the heart of the project
The plant uses solar energy to produce 18 m³ of hydrogen daily with 99.999% purity, initially applied to cooling the plant's generators. The project incorporates cutting-edge technologies, such as blockchain tracking and a multi-energy source management system patented by INPI, guaranteeing exclusive exploitation rights to EDF Power Solutions for up to 20 years.
In addition to increasing operational efficiency and reducing costs, the initiative paves the way for the future commercialization of surplus hydrogen, consolidating Brazil as a hub for clean energy innovation. With 2.7 GW of installed capacity in the country and a presence in 25 global markets, EDF Power Solutions thus reaffirms its commitment to leading the energy transition and driving sustainable development on a global scale.
