The Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS) has taken a strategic step towards leadership in energy innovation with the inauguration of the Copa H2 Modular Laboratory, focused on groundbreaking research into green hydrogen applied to industry. The initiative, carried out in partnership with Copa Energia and with support from the Foundation for the Support of the Development of Education, Science and Technology of Mato Grosso do Sul, reinforces the state's role as an emerging hub in the transition to a low-carbon economy.
Integration between university, industry and government drives applied innovation
Located in the Laboratory of Advanced Technologies in Energy and Sustainability (LaTES), the new research center concentrates its efforts on developing an innovative solution: the mixture of green hydrogen with LPG for industrial applications. The technology, based on the MixOby equipment — developed by UFMS itself — allows the production of hydrogen from water using solar energy and its direct injection into the gas pipeline in real time. The goal is to reduce CO₂ and nitrogen oxide emissions without compromising energy efficiency, creating a viable alternative for energy-intensive sectors such as food and glass.
With commercial application projected by the end of 2026, the project illustrates an innovation model oriented towards the convergence between scientific research and market demand. By articulating public funding, academic capacity, and industrial interest, the initiative signals a structural shift in the Brazilian innovation ecosystem, where hydrogen emerges as a central driver of competitiveness and sustainability.
