Australia is moving towards a cleaner, more competitive energy future with the implementation of its National Hydrogen Strategy. The plan, which aims to transform the country into one of the world’s leading hydrogen exporters, includes 34 actions organised into five thematic areas, designed to position Australia as a global leader in the sector and facilitate its transition to net zero emissions.
A vision for global competitiveness and local benefits
The Australian strategy seeks to create an innovative, safe and competitive hydrogen industry, focusing on five main pillars. The first, Supply, aims to ensure that the country’s hydrogen production is cost-competitive in the global market. This approach includes investments in technology and infrastructure to reduce the cost of green hydrogen, making it a viable alternative for decarbonisation.
On the Demand and Decarbonisation front, Australia aims to identify the industrial sectors with the greatest potential to adopt hydrogen as a fuel, promoting the decarbonisation of industries such as steel, heavy transport and power generation. The third pillar, Community Benefit, focuses on raising awareness in local communities about the economic and environmental opportunities of hydrogen, ensuring that the benefits of the sector are widely realized.
Finally, the strategy looks to the long term with the Looking Ahead pillar, which sets growth targets and identifies the most promising use cases for hydrogen, aligning industrial development with public policies to ensure a sustainable and competitive energy transition.
