The federal government presented new projections for the future of biofuels in the country, reinforcing the sector's strategic role in the energy transition. The Biofuel Supply Booklet, released in September by the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) in partnership with the Energy Research Company (EPE), is part of the Ten-Year Energy Expansion Plan (PDE 2035) and highlights estimated investments of R$110 billion by 2035—resources earmarked for the construction of new biorefineries, plant modernization, and raw material diversification.
Ethanol, biomethane, and biodiesel drive the advancement of the renewable energy matrix
The study indicates that ethanol should maintain its leading role in the national energy matrix, with supply growing by 30% by 2035, reaching 51 billion liters. Corn-based ethanol, which currently represents 20% of production, is expected to exceed 30% of total supply in the next decade, while demand will reach 48.2 billion liters. The expansion is also reflected in new opportunities for bioelectricity, with a technical potential of an average of 5.9 GW from sugarcane bagasse, and in biomethane production—estimated at 6.4 billion Nm³ by the end of the period, equivalent to 10% of national natural gas consumption in 2024.
In the case of biodiesel, the projection is 13.9 billion liters by 2035, with soybean oil remaining the main input. The National Biodiesel Production and Use Program (PNPB) remains a central pillar of the sector, boosting family farming and promoting social inclusion and income generation in rural areas.

SAF and the New Frontier of Sustainable Fuels
The report also highlights the rise of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), which will gain relevance starting in 2030. Already announced projects are expected to produce 1.7 billion liters annually, a volume expected to grow to 2.8 billion by 2035—enough to meet 66% of the emissions reduction targets established by the international CORSIA and ProBioQAV programs.
