The Federation of Industries of the State of Rio de Janeiro (FIRJ) held a strategic meeting with business leaders from Campos dos Goytacazes and Macaé to present the expansion plans for the Hydrogen and Low-Carbon Derivatives Hub at the Port of Açu. This initiative reinforces the leading role of Northern Rio de Janeiro in the Brazilian energy transition agenda and broadens the debate on new industrial vectors linked to the low-carbon economy, especially in the context of the transformation of the oil, gas, and port logistics sectors.
Expansion foresees new sustainable fuels and increased production capacity
During the meeting of the Firjan Northern Rio de Janeiro Regional Business Council, representatives from the Port of Açu detailed the proposed expansion of the hub, currently structured in an area of 102.3 hectares with an estimated electrolysis capacity of 3.7 GW. The project brings together initiatives focused on the production of renewable hydrogen, e-methanol, low-carbon ammonia, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), renewable diesel, and solutions associated with CO₂ capture. The new phase foresees the incorporation of more than 6 million square meters into the industrial complex, in addition to expanding production capacity by more than 3,000 kilotons per year.

Among the highlights are an increase of over 400,000 tons per year in the production of renewable hydrogen and more than 1 million tons annually of synthetic methanol. The plan also includes dedicated infrastructure for electricity, industrial water, and integrated logistics systems, strengthening Açu's position as one of the main Latin American hubs for low-carbon fuels. The meeting also provided an opportunity to discuss the economic impacts of possible changes in the redistribution of oil royalties, a sensitive issue for a strategic region in offshore production in the Campos Basin.
