From May 20 to 22, the port city of Rotterdam, in the Netherlands, hosted the World Hydrogen 2025 Summit & Exhibition, the leading international event dedicated to innovation and energy transition with a focus on hydrogen. Brazil, represented by a robust 43-member delegation led by ApexBrasil (Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency), was present with concrete proposals, regulatory advances and strategic projects for sustainable hydrogen. The participation signals the country’s growing scientific and technological maturity in one of the most relevant issues of the new global green economy.

Brazilian delegation promotes business, innovation and regulatory frameworks

The Brazilian stand attracted attention with innovative projects, business rounds and one-on-one meetings with strategic investors, reflecting the global interest in the low-emission hydrogen production chain in Brazil. The national program also included the panel “The Hydrogen Revolution in Brazil: New Legal Frameworks, Regulatory Advances and Emerging Opportunities”, which discussed the challenges and growth potential of the hydrogen economy in the country.

Brazil's agenda at the event also included technical visits promoted by the Dutch government, held in the days leading up to and following the Summit. Research centers, technology parks and three of Europe's main ports — Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Antwerp — were visited with the aim of observing logistical and technological models that can be replicated or adapted to the Brazilian context.

Academic leadership and strategic vision for Brazilian hydrogen

One of the highlights of Brazil's participation was Professor Paulo Emílio de Miranda, professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) and President of the Brazilian Hydrogen Association (ABH2). Head of the Hydrogen Laboratory at Coppe/UFRJ, he participated in technical meetings and strategic forums during the event, including the Hydrogen Trade Forum of IPHE and the Ministerial Meeting of the International Hydrogen Trade Forum, led by the Minister of Energy of the Netherlands.

"This trip began with technical visits and discussions scheduled and hosted by the Dutch Government on the two days before the WHS and one day after. They included companies, development centers, technology parks and the ports of Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Antwerp." (*)

During his participation, the professor highlighted the Brazilian approach focused on defining the limit value and boundaries of the hydrogen system, rather than adopting specific technological routes. According to him, the focus is on attracting foreign direct investment as a driver for the development of local production and use, as well as the export of low-emission hydrogen and decarbonized products derived from it.

"I also participated in the Summit concurrently with the fair, having participated in a meeting of the Hydrogen Trade Forum committee of the IPHE and a Ministerial Meeting of the International Hydrogen Trade Forum, led by the Minister of Energy of the Netherlands, where I highlighted Brazil's position on the topic, emphasizing the definition of the limit value and boundaries of the system, rather than focusing on specific technological routes, highlighting the importance of foreign direct investment in Brazil to stimulate transnational trade in low-emission hydrogen and products decarbonized by it." Having brought together more than 15,000 experts from around the world and around 400 exhibitors, the World Hydrogen 2025 Summit was an excellent stage for Brazil to reaffirm its position as a strategic player in the international energy transition scenario, with not only technical and natural potential, but also regulatory and institutional potential, to lead the new era of low-carbon hydrogen.
