The transition to low-carbon mobility in Brazil has gained a new technical milestone with the publication of the Technical Note “Decarbonization of the Road Transportation Sector: Carbon Intensity of Energy Sources”, prepared by the Energy Research Company (EPE). The document provides essential support to the National Energy Policy Council (CNPE) for establishing the goals of the Green Mobility and Innovation Program (Mover), established by Law No. 14,993/2024, also known as the Fuel of the Future Law. The initiative seeks not only to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, but also to restructure the role of energy in the transportation sector, which is responsible for a significant portion of national emissions.

Carbon at the wheel: measuring emissions with life cycle precision

With this study, Brazil takes another step towards structuring a sustainable mobility policy based on robust technical evidence, aligning energy innovation with the climate emergency. The precise definition of carbon intensity will be crucial not only to guide the automotive industry and infrastructure investments, but also to ensure that the country takes concrete steps towards cleaner, more efficient and competitive transport on the global stage.
