The Brazilian electricity sector is preparing for another year of strong growth in power generation capacity. According to estimates from the National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL) , the expected expansion in supply for 2025 is 9,950 MW of installed capacity. If this volume is confirmed, it will approach the historical records registered in 2023 ( 10,316 MW ) and 2024 ( 10,792 MW ), consolidating the trend of accelerated expansion of the country's electricity matrix.
The advance in energy generation reflects the dynamism of the sector, which has received robust and diversified investments in renewable and thermoelectric sources, with emphasis on solar and wind projects.
Advances in renewable and thermal generation mark the beginning of the year
The first month of 2025 has already seen a significant increase in generation capacity, with 1,350.54 MW added to the national electricity system . In total, 26 new plants entered commercial operation in January, distributed among different energy sources:
Solar photovoltaics: 13 plants, adding 567.21 MW
Thermal power plants: 2 plants, adding 459 MW
Wind power: 10 plants, adding 315 MW
Small hydroelectric power plant: 1 plant, adding 9.33 MW
Diversification in expansion demonstrates the balance between renewable and thermoelectric sources, ensuring energy security and greater stability to the system.
Growth was recorded in seven states in four Brazilian regions , with emphasis on Mato Grosso do Sul , where the Suzano Central Generating Thermoelectric Plant added 384 MW , and Minas Gerais , which received seven new plants , totaling 336.83 MW .

Total power grid capacity and monitoring tools
On February 6, 2025 , Brazil reached 209,726.3 MW of inspected power, according to data from ANEEL's Generation Information System (SIGA) . Of the total energy in operation, 85.01% comes from renewable sources , reinforcing the country's commitment to a more sustainable energy matrix.
To monitor the sector's expansion, ANEEL provides the RALIE dashboard , an interactive tool that allows monitoring the evolution of the electricity matrix by year, region and type of energy source. The system facilitates access to detailed information on the inspection of new plants and projects under development, promoting greater transparency and accurate monitoring of generation capacity in Brazil.
With projected growth close to previous records, 2025 is shaping up to be another key year for advancing the country's electrical infrastructure, ensuring sufficient energy supply to meet growing demand and drive sustainable economic development.
