The Canada Energy Fact Book 2025–2026 offers a comprehensive overview of the growing role of hydrogen in Canada's energy strategy and in the global context. The report highlights hydrogen as a versatile energy vector, capable of supporting the decarbonization of sectors that are difficult to electrify, such as heavy industry and freight transport. With an estimated annual production of 4 million tons, Canada is now among the top ten global producers, combining industrial scale, technological innovation, and an energy base favorable to the transition to low-carbon routes.
Production, technology, and jobs: hydrogen at the heart of the Canadian transition
In the Canadian case, most hydrogen still derives from natural gas, but the use of carbon abatement and electrolysis technologies is growing. A milestone is Air Liquide's 20 MW electrolyzer, the largest in the country, in addition to an already installed capacity of over 12,000 tons of low-carbon hydrogen per year. The report also highlights the sector's economic impact: more than 100 companies operate along the value chain, generating approximately 4,300 direct jobs, revenues exceeding US$525 million, and continuous investments in research and development.
