Hydrogen could cement Brazil's position as a powerhouse in energy decarbonization

Low-carbon hydrogen is emerging as a key driver of the global energy transition, and Brazil possesses the technical, economic, and natural conditions to secure a leading position in this market. A study by researchers Pedro Henrique Rosan Silva and Victor Hugo Souza de Abreu indicates that the complementarity between solar and wind energy sources can boost the efficiency of hydrogen production via electrolysis and help make the country competitive in the new low-carbon economy.
Integration of renewables, competitiveness, and regulatory certainty
Analysis of the Chafariz and Luzia complexes indicates that integrated renewable generation projects can achieve high technical viability, with a levelized cost of hydrogen production estimated at US$ 2.70 per kilogram. The study highlights that combining solar and wind energy mitigates the intermittency of renewable sources, providing greater electricity supply stability and better operating conditions for electrolyzers. In this scenario, hydrogen can serve simultaneously as a fuel, an industrial feedstock, and an energy storage medium, with the potential to support decarbonization in sectors such as transportation, heavy industry, and fertilizer production.
However, the authors emphasize that transforming this potential into global leadership will depend on the consolidation of public policies, infrastructure, and legal certainty. Law No. 14.948/2024, which established the Legal Framework for Low-Carbon Hydrogen, represents a significant institutional step forward by laying the groundwork for incentives, research, and development across the value chain. For Brazil to turn its abundant renewable resources into a lasting competitive advantage, the challenge now lies in advancing complementary regulations, attracting capital, and structuring strategic partnerships capable of transforming green hydrogen into a new pillar of economic, industrial, and environmental development.
