The National Confederation of Industry (CNI) recently launched a publication entitled “Hydrogen Certification: Benchmarking the Certification Process and Contributions to Brazil,” which addresses the decisive moment for the national energy future.
By comparing the criteria adopted by various countries and proposing guidelines for Brazil, the study seeks to build the foundations for consolidating low-carbon hydrogen (H₂BC) as a central vector of the energy and industrial transition in the country—generating confidence for investors, guaranteeing environmental credibility, and paving the way for global competitiveness.
From international standards to national regulation: what hydrogen certification represents for Brazil
The CNI report analyzes certification models adopted by nations such as Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States, China, Japan, India, France, and South Korea—countries with different degrees of regulatory maturity and experience in the sector. The central proposal is to create a robust, transparent system in Brazil, aligned with international standards — especially the ISO/TS 19870:2023 standard — capable of ensuring, from production to commercialization, that certified hydrogen truly meets rigorous emission and sustainability criteria.
For Brazil, certification is not just a symbolic seal: it is a strategic mechanism to transform the renewable potential of the national energy matrix into a concrete competitive advantage. With clear rules, the country can attract investments, foster related industries—such as clean ammonia production, green steel, and alternative fuels—and guarantee the traceability and credibility of H₂BC production.
