The latest Energy Policy Review for Brazil, conducted by the International Energy Agency (IEA) in partnership with the Brazilian government, offers an ambitious and pragmatic portrait of the country's role in the global transition to clean energy sources. Published in the context of COP30, the "Brazil 2025" report reinforces Brazil's leading role, highlights its progress, and points to ways to strengthen energy security, sustainability, and equity.

Brazil as a green leader: advances, challenges, and IEA recommendations

The study acknowledges that Brazil already enjoys a privileged position in the global energy transition, supported by long-term policies, regulatory stability, and an electricity matrix with 90% low-emission sources. Furthermore, the country is a giant in biofuels, which opens opportunities to become a reference in low-emission hydrogen and next-generation biofuels as well.

However, the report identifies areas that require attention and investment. The IEA recommends that Brazil strengthen the flexibility of its electricity system, with improvements to the grid, energy storage, and mechanisms to adapt to demand. There is also a call to expand hydrogen and biofuel infrastructure, supported by clear policies and incentives for decarbonization in transportation.
