This report from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) analyzes Brazil's trajectory in the deployment of renewable energies and positions the country as one of the most consistent cases of energy transition on a national scale. With an electricity matrix in which renewable sources account for approximately 89% of total generation, Brazil stands out not only for its volume but also for its capacity to integrate these sources into the national grid in a competitive and stable manner, with positive economic effects such as job creation and the strengthening of domestic production chains.

Structural Lessons from a Model Based on Planning, Governance, and Competitiveness

The report examines the main pillars supporting the energy transition in the Brazilian electricity sector, highlighting the use of competitive renewable energy contracting mechanisms, the availability of strategic minerals, the development of human capital in key institutions, and a relatively consolidated institutional governance.

IRENA also emphasizes the importance of integrated energy planning, access to low-cost capital through national development finance institutions, and a robust physical infrastructure supported by national supply chains. According to the analysis, this combination of factors explains Brazil's success and offers valuable lessons for other countries seeking to accelerate their own transition to cleaner, more resilient, and economically inclusive energy systems.
