The European Union reaffirms its ambition to lead the global energy transition with the publication of the report Regional Energy Transition Outlook: European Union, developed in collaboration with the European Commission and Member States. The document indicates that renewable energy capacity in the bloc must almost triple by 2030, quadruple by 2040 and reach a five-fold increase by 2050 compared to 2021 levels. More than quantitative targets, the report provides a strategic mapping of the reforms needed to advance the energy transition with security, competitiveness and equity.

Accelerators and bottlenecks for an ambitious energy transition

The report identifies four key enablers for the success of the transition: integrated energy planning, expansion of transmission networks, electrification and greater integration of European energy markets. However, it also acknowledges that the pace of transformation has been uneven across the bloc's countries, which requires more agile policy frameworks, strengthened governance and effective institutional coordination.

The urgency is clear: achieving a pathway compatible with the EU’s climate commitments will require robust investment in renewables, storage infrastructure, smart grids and the phasing out of fossil fuels. Furthermore, alignment between industrial strategy and climate goals will be crucial to ensure economic resilience and energy security in a changing geopolitical landscape.
