The Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 is an ambitious initiative that aims to transform the emirate into a global hub for clean energy and the green economy by 2050. Launched in 2015, the strategy sets clear targets for clean energy production, aiming to significantly reduce the region’s carbon footprint and promote sustainable development.
Strategic goals and investments
The strategy states that Dubai must generate 75% of its energy needs from clean sources by 2050. To achieve this goal, the initiative is structured around five main pillars: infrastructure, legislation, financing, capacity building and an environmentally friendly energy mix. One of the flagship projects is the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, planned to be the world’s largest single-site solar power generator, with an expected capacity of 5,000 MW by 2030 and a total investment of AED 50 billion.
In addition, the strategy envisages the creation of a AED 100 billion Green Fund to provide loans on favorable terms to investors in the clean energy sector, encouraging foreign direct investment and strengthening public-private partnerships in the development of new renewable energy projects.
Advances and future prospects
Since the launch of the strategy, Dubai has made significant progress in diversifying its energy mix. By the end of 2023, the emirate had achieved a 16.1% share of clean energy in its energy mix . Intermediate targets include reaching 25% clean energy by 2030, with the ultimate goal of 75% by 2050.
The strategy also emphasizes the importance of a robust legislative framework to support clean energy policies , as well as investments in research and development in next-generation technologies such as 3D printing and drones. These initiatives reflect Dubai’s commitment to balancing economic growth with environmental sustainability, positioning itself as a global leader in the transition to a low-carbon economy.
