In an unprecedented step toward the energy transition in the maritime sector, Fortescue, in partnership with Trovio and the Green Hydrogen Organization (GH2), completed the issuance of the world's first digital fuel certificate for the transfer of ammonia to a vessel. The operation took place in the Port of Rotterdam during the fueling of the Fortescue Green Pioneer, the first ocean-going vessel to dual-fuel ammonia.
Digital infrastructure strengthens transparency and sets a new standard for green fuels
The certificate was issued by Trovio's CorTenX platform, which records immutable data on fuel sustainability attributes, from its origin to handling and transfer details. This level of traceability, protected by encryption, enables auditable transparency and strengthens trust in the supply chain. In addition to meeting third-party certification and regulatory requirements, the system supports mass balance methodologies, allowing for tracking of fuel custody among different actors and accounting for associated emissions.
Designed for environmental markets, CorTenX is already trusted by governments and international institutions, offering a secure, interoperable, and real-time auditable architecture. The Rotterdam pilot not only demonstrates the operational viability of ammonia as a marine fuel but also highlights the importance of robust digital records in transforming sustainability ambitions into market practices, aligning the shipping industry with global decarbonization goals.
