The UK Low Carbon Hydrogen Standard – Version 4 report, published in January 2026, marks a new stage in the UK's strategy to structure a hydrogen market aligned with climate goals and the operational realities of the energy system. Updated periodically since its original 2022 version, the standard reflects the evolution of regulatory, technological, and industrial learning, consolidating itself as the main instrument for defining what is considered low-carbon hydrogen in the country and guiding public and private investments.
Greater clarity, regulatory eligibility, and integration with the energy system
Version 4 of the Low Carbon Hydrogen Standard incorporates lessons learned from the practical application of the previous version, especially during the first Hydrogen Allocation Round, as well as extensive feedback from industrial, technical, and legal stakeholders.
The document also introduces specific guidelines on stored feedstocks and fuels and recognizes the use of solid carbon byproducts in applications such as asphalt, increasing systemic efficiency.
