The city of Uberaba, in Minas Gerais, took a strategic leap forward in the international energy scenario by announcing, during the World Hydrogen Summit in Rotterdam, the largest private investment in its history: R$7.8 billion earmarked for the construction of a sustainable hydrogen and ammonia plant. The project, which will be installed in the city's Export Processing Zone (ZPE), promises not only to put the city on the global energy transition map, but also to consolidate Brazil as a protagonist in the production of green hydrogen on an industrial scale.
H2Brazil: Portuguese-Brazilian innovation to lead the production of clean energy
The project will be made possible by the H2Brazil project, an international initiative between Brazil and Portugal with the institutional support of the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME), the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI), ApexBrasil and the German cooperation agency GIZ. Expected to generate almost a thousand direct jobs, the plant will occupy an area of 700 thousand square meters within the ZPE — the only one in the Southeast region in operation and one of four in operation in the country.
The initiative repositions Uberaba as a strategic hub for exports of clean energy and derivatives, expanding its influence in the development of sustainable technologies. The plant will be the largest industrial-scale plant in Brazil dedicated to the production of renewable hydrogen and ammonia, with the potential to supply both the domestic market and global partners seeking decarbonization solutions.
Mayor Elisa Araújo and the Secretary of Economic Development, Tourism and Innovation, Celso Neto, highlighted the transformative nature of the project for the economy local e sua integração com os esforços nacionais rumo a uma matriz energética limpa.
