The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) held its 30th Council meeting in Abu Dhabi, consolidating its position as one of the leading global forums for coordination on clean energy. The meeting aimed to review the progress of international initiatives and align strategic priorities to accelerate the energy transition in the lead-up to COP30, to be hosted by Brazil, and the 16th IRENA Assembly, scheduled for January 2026.
Focus on clean industrialization and investments in renewable energy
During the two-day meeting, Council members focused on advancing the goals established in the UAE Consensus—tripling renewable energy capacity and doubling energy efficiency by 2030. The debate was driven by data from IRENA's most recent report, launched at the pre-COP conference in Brazil, which revealed insufficient progress towards achieving the objectives of the Paris Agreement.
The discussions also addressed the need to strengthen supply chains for critical materials, expand access to investment, and promote clean industrialization as a pillar of sustainable development. The Council's conclusions will guide the 16th IRENA Assembly, which will bring together ministers and high-level representatives to define the global guidelines for the energy transition in the next cycle.
